PIP INSURANCE

Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance, also known as no-fault insurance, is designed to cover medical expenses and other associated costs if you're injured in a car accident, regardless of who caused it. This type of insurance handles medical bills, including costs for services such as chiropractic assistance, which may not be covered by standard health insurance. PIP is comprehensive in that it also compensates for lost wages due to injuries sustained in an automobile incident. Additionally, PIP benefits are applicable even when the policyholder is injured while not in their own vehicle, such as when walking or biking.

PIP insurance extends its coverage not only to the policyholder but also to household members, passengers in the policyholder's car, and others driving the vehicle with permission. It addresses various expenses, including medical and hospital bills, lost income, essential services that the injured person cannot perform, and in unfortunate cases, funeral costs. However, it does not cover property damage or injuries to third parties. In Oregon, PIP coverage is mandatory and offers up to $15,000 per person for various expenses, while in Washington, it is optional and provides a lower coverage amount. Coverage levels and the necessity for PIP insurance differ across states, with some requiring it under no-fault laws and others offering it as an additional option.

PIP insurance typically covers:

  • Medical expenses: Including hospital bills, medications, surgeries, dental and eye care, nursing services, prosthetics, chiropractic services, lab tests, scans, and other necessary medical treatments.
  • Lost wages: Compensation for income lost due to being unable to work because of injuries sustained in the accident.
  • Rehabilitation costs: Expenses for ongoing rehabilitation and necessary therapies.
  • Funeral expenses: Costs associated with funerals and burials if the accident leads to a fatality.
  • Survivor's loss: Financial assistance to dependents in case of the policyholder's death resulting from the car accident.
  • Childcare expenses: If the injured party cannot provide childcare due to their injuries, PIP can cover these costs.
  • Household services: If injuries prevent the completion of regular household tasks, PIP may cover expenses such as cleaning and lawn maintenance.
  • Transportation costs: Reimbursement for travel to and from medical appointments (medical mileage).
  • Loss of services: Compensation for services the injured person can no longer perform.
